“The Proverb says, ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish.’ A budget reflects a vision. If the vision here is a state where opportunity gaps between us widen to a breaking point, where quality education for our youth is out of reach, and where our human and natural resources are squandered and are not protected from unrestrained market forces, then the House of Representatives’ version of the budget could be said to be quite visionary.
I hope the Senate, being a thoughtful and deliberative body, will take the time to offer a budget that reflects a vision for our state that is more compassionate and accountable to the next generation, and to those who are the most vulnerable among us. The second part of the Proverb says, ‘Happy is the one who keeps the law.’ That would be to Love our Neighbor. I hope the budget that finally gets adopted reflects that noble and worthy vision.”
