When you shop for health insurance, don’t forget your teeth

For the thousands of people in New Hampshire who are uninsured, dental care is a common service to go without when money is tight. Even people who have health insurance will forego dental coverage as a way to save money. Under the new health care law, dental coverage is now available on the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Covering New Hampshire is helping residents not only sign up for health insurance plans through the Marketplace, but are helping people sign up for dental insurance too. From now until the Marketplace open enrollment period ends on March 31, Covering New Hampshire will host events every day throughout the state where people can speak with certified assisters, ask questions about the plans available to them and find out how to enroll. Individuals can also receive one on one assistance by setting up an appointment with an assister located close to them, a list of assisters is available at

Although people are required to enroll in a health insurance plan this year or risk being charged a penalty, dental insurance is not required for adults under the Affordable Care Act. Dental coverage is considered an essential health benefit for children, which means health insurance companies must make this coverage available, either as part of a health plan or as a stand-alone plan. Insurers don’t have to offer adults dental coverage and those who decide not to get dental insurance will not be charged a penalty.

However, paying for dental insurance now can help prevent bigger dental problems later. Tooth decay is a preventable disease which if left untreated can turn into a serious medical condition. Visiting the dentist regularly for teeth cleanings can prevent tooth decay and more costly treatments later.

For more information about how to sign up for dental insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace or speak with a certified assister, go to or call the federal Health Care Hotline at 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325).

Covering New Hampshire is the official, free resource for Granite Staters to learn about the Health Insurance Marketplace and the new, affordable health insurance plans that are now available. Covering New Hampshire aims to help people understand the new health care law and assist in connecting people with Health Insurance Marketplace. The organization also connects people with in-person assisters who will help them enroll and with organizations that can help them get coverage.
