Manchester, NH – This fall, the Currier Museum of Art launched The Secret Life of Art: Mysteries of the Museum Revealed, an exploration of the life of an art museum. The exhibition gives a glimpse into the world of museums, unlocking secrets from the Currier’s own collection of art along the way. Visit this fall to get a behind-the-scenes view of the museum. It’s not a secret anymore!
The museum’s entrance is located at 150 Ash Street and parking is available in the on-site lot. Museum hours are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday - Friday 11 am–5 pm, Saturday 10 am–5 pm, open the first Thursday of each month 11 am–8 pm, and closed Tuesday. Admission to the museum is always free for children 17 and under, and every Saturday from 10 am–noon admission is free to everyone.
The Currier Art Center offers art classes and vacation camps for all ages.

Public Guided Tours
Tours are offered daily, and highlight the history of the museum, the collection, and special exhibitions. Public tours are free with museum admission. Zimmerman House ticketed tours
Take a tour of the Zimmerman House and learn more about this Frank Lloyd Wright treasure! A Zimmerman House Tour provides visitors with a 90-minute tour of the house with information about the Zimmermans’ life in the 1950s and 60s, and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. These tours are offered Mondays and Fridays at 2 pm, Thursdays and Fridays at 11:30 am and 2 pm, Saturdays at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm, and Sundays at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Zimmerman House public tours are free for museum members. Reservations are required and can be made via our website at www.currier.org or by calling us at 603.669.6144 x108.
Private Group Tours Full-length tours, or 1-hour, introductory “Highlights” tours of the house can also be scheduled throughout the week and on weekends. Zimmerman House private tours are now available in Spanish!

Since 2006, the Art Center has hosted many memorable learning opportunities for students, young and old, to work directly with some of our region’s best -known artists and teachers. This exhibition highlights a selection of those special moments when “Artist Mentors” have worked closely with young students to create ambitious community projects, and “Master Artists” have inspired teen and adult students by working side by side with them in dynamic studio-based learning labs. Works and projects by Marek Bennett, Neva Cole, Richard Haynes Jr., Cheryl Holbert, Jon Imber, Jimmy Leslie, Bruce McColl and John O’Shaughnessy will be on view.

Board the bus to New York City! Visit museums, shops, restaurants, friends, or the Currier’s Jan Gossart Self Portrait painting that is currently on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of their exhibition Man, Myth, and Sensual Pleasures: Jan Gossart’s Renaissance, on view through January 17, 2011. The coach departs from the Catholic Diocese of Manchester (153 Ash Street, across from the museum) promptly at 6:30 am. Arrive in Manhattan about 11:30 am to spend the day in the city. Educator’s Workshop: Mysteries of the Museum Revealed

Visiting museums has been an important part of student art experiences, but have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at the Currier? This workshop will provide K-12 educators with new ways to engage students with art and incorporate lessons into the classroom based on museum practices. Tour the special exhibition, work closely with Currier educators on techniques and lesson plans, and leave with fresh ideas! This workshop is a perfect opportunity to partner with a teacher of another discipline and think creatively about cross-curricular connections. First Thursday: How to Curate Your Thanksgiving

The word “curate” has come to encompass more than organizing art exhibitions, and generally means to make pointed choices that together construct a statement. Now apply that concept to all your Thanksgiving choices: appetizers, side dishes, dessert, centerpiece, beer, wine. Learn how to curate these important choices so that your guests leave knowing how much you care. Enjoy a 15-minute talk by Currier Manager of Events, Lisa Pavlopoulos at 5:45 pm and then visit stations to sample food and beverages by Richard’s Bistro, Bert’s Better Beers, Martignetti Companies, Michelle’s Gourmet Pastries; flowers by Chalifour’s Flowers, and Gift & Gourmet. This felting and weaving workshop, for teens and adults, is the perfect introduction to fiber arts – as well as a refresher course for those who want to get back into the medium. Fritography is the process of using crushed glass (frit) and colored glass powders to create fused glass artwork. Learn the process of fused glass and the techniques for creating and assembling these painterly designs. We will produce two tiles using different methods. Spend some quality family time at the Currier the second Saturday of every month. Do you want to create high resolution digital images of your artwork for submittal to galleries, contests or magazines? Do you have Photoshop or similar photo editing programs, but can’t get the results you want? Inferior images ruin any chance for artwork to reach its full audience. This workshop will help you learn basic Photoshop skills essential for producing professional, high-quality prints and files, including color management, resolution, sizing, file formats, and outputting to print and the web. The workshop will also review solutions to common photo manipulation problems. The instructor will host class using a laptop with projector. It is recommended that students bring a laptop to class loaded with Photoshop and artwork photos. If students do not have a laptop, the class still works as a demonstration. Cost is $80 per student. Zimmerman House Focus Tour – Evolution of Design at the Zimmerman House

These 90-minute tours are designed for guests who have already visited the Zimmerman House and would like to examine specific, changing topics connected to the house, the Zimmermans, or the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Focus Tours include a brief, general introduction to the house, and then focus on a specific topic of interest. The tour is led by Docent Judy Ransmeier. Film Screening: The Rape of Europa (at the Red River Theatres)

This film tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War. The film will be introduced by Tom Selldorff, who recently regained possession of the two side panels of an 18th-century Austrian altarpiece that were stolen by the Nazis from his grandfather’s art collection. The paintings are on display for the first time in the United States at the Currier in The Secret Life of Art: Mysteries of the Museum Revealed. At 5:45 pm enjoy a reception with light refreshments at the Red River Theatres, 11 South Main Street, Concord. Then stay for the film screening (117 minutes) at 6:15 pm. This workshop, for teens and adults, will demonstrate how to make chains using just wire, a few hand tools, and your imagination. Chains such as Egyptian spiral chain, Viking (knitted) chain, wire wrapped links with beads, and basic link chains will be covered. Using 14g to 26g round wire participants will wrap, bend, knit, hammer and spiral their way to making our own chain samples and a chain to be worn by the end of the day! Cost is $60 per student. Come to the Currier for an art-related story read by a children’s librarian from Manchester City, followed by a gallery talk about the “Artwork of the Day”. Recommended for ages 3 to 5, but all are welcome. Listen to the story, A Blue Butterfly, by Bijou Le Tord and look at The Seine at Bougival by Claude Monet. Free with museum admission.
