Concord’s Purple Finches Youth Chorus Members Earn Spot in National Choirs

CONCORD, NH—Fourteen members of the Concord Community Music School's Purple Finches Youth Chorus recently had a chance to sing on the national stage, as performers in the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE) National Conference Choirs.

“I’m so proud of these students, and how hard they worked to earn their spots in the National Choirs,” said Purple Finches director Maria Isaak. “It’s a wonderful learning experience for the participants, and they come back with all kinds of confidence and leadership abilities, which benefits the whole group.”

Students William Veenstra, Tessa Foley, Anya Kendziora, Emma Richardson, Madeline Short, Sophia Estes, Sophia Isaak, Katherine Mitchell, Eowyn Lehrhaupt, Madeline Decker, Harriet Pearce, Anne Pearce, Tess Parrott, and Chani Parrott performed in the finale concert at the 2018 OAKE National Conference, a four-day event that brings together teachers, conductors, and clinicians from across the country.

During their March trip to this year’s conference in Oklahoma City, OK, students had the opportunity to connect with fellow highly motivated youth vocalists and to learn and perform under the direction of internationally renowned conductors. After several days of intensive rehearsals, the students performed an evening concert for conference attendees.

OAKE-full-group“My daughter had a fantastic experience and one that deepened her budding love for singing and music. She got to learn from an incredible director and kids from all over the country and they produced amazing music in 3 days. Despite 5+ hours of rehearsal each day she had only good things to say and even wanted to do more!” wrote one parent of a Purple Finch chorus member who attended the OAKE Conference. “We could not have done this without Maria's encouragement, coaching, and preparation. This is a wonderful opportunity that she gives to our kids.”

The Purple Finches Youth Chorus is open to kids grades K-8. Members learn musical literacy through regular rhythm, solfege, and ear-training, based on Kodaly methods. The chorus performs frequently at the Music School and for community-wide events. The group is sponsored by Granite Investment Advisors. The Purple Finches have been rehearsing for a production of “Once on This Island JR.,” a musical play to be presented at Concord Community Music School this weekend, May 18-20.
