Waterville Valley’s Town Square will be a-BUZZ July 6-8, 2012, as the Black Fly Triathlon Festival returns for its fourth year. The three-day festival includes a Bike Time Trial Friday evening, the International Triathlon and “Little Bugger” Kids Triathlon on Saturday, and a Sprint Triathlon on Sunday. For those looking for the ultimate tri weekend, there is the “Lord of the Flies” Challenge, competing in all three events. A new addition this year is the Mini Midge Youth Obstacle Run for pre-school aged children. It’s a weekend geared toward the entire family.
In addition to the beautiful scenery, athletes will be treated to live music, themed aid stations, fireworks, plenty of athlete “goodies”, and tons of kid-friendly activities. According to Race Director Keith Jordan, Waterville Valley is the perfect venue for a triathlon, “the course is scenic and very safe, and there are plenty of hotel rooms for participants, who can roll out of bed and walk to the race start.”
With so much to do in Town Square, the festival makes for a great family vacation. While the athletes swim, bike and run, spouses and children can rent bicycles, go for a paddleboat ride, hang out on the beach at Corcoran’s Pond, or shop the stores in Town Square. “The overwhelming feedback is that Black Fly is the most FUN tri fest the athletes have attended, “says Jordan.
The event is also a fundraiser for the “Make-A-Wish” Foundation of New Hampshire, with all proceeds from the Little Bugger Kids Tri and the Rubber Ducky Race going to Make-A-Wish. Athletes participating in the adult triathlons can also sign up to be “Wish-Racers” and fundraise for the charity, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
